Mara Kai on Mangere Mountain

On Tuesday 24th July the senior school, rooms 5,7 and 8
went on a trip to Mangere Mountain to learn about Mara Kai, and to learn about how to grow plants traditionally (in the past). We learned about the food that the Maori people came with from their islands.

Farrell greeted us and he told us about the history of  the local iwi. Hape rode a giant stingray (Kaiwhare) from Hawaiiki and how his tribe carried their waka from Tamaki Estuary, to Mangere and we learned, about gardening tools called ko and timotimo (a traditional Maori spade and weeding tool.)
Then we were split to three group we went and learnt how the Maori people made tools and we learned how to use the tools for gardening. We even learned about mararongoa (medicine garden). We even learned about Kawakawa. Kawakawa is a plant leaf that Maori use as medicine. It numbs your mouth when you have a toothache.

After that we went inside and ate our lunch. After we finished our lunch we went and climbed the mountain. When the bus came we went inside the bus then we went back to school.
